This depiction of Big Sur was inspired by a recent family trip to the Monterey area in California. If you look closely, you can even see the iconic Bixby Bridge. The rugged coastline from Monterey to San Simeon is spectacular at every turn on Highway 1. The name Big Sur is derived from the Spanish "el sur grande" which translates as "the big south" or from "el pais grande del sur," "the big country of the south."
